Spring is here

The cherry blossoms are in full bloom.

Thanks to Vivi, I am able to get around much more easily, so I could go a bit further away to see the cherry blossoms.

A nice collaboration between cherry blossoms and rapeseed blossoms.

And some pansy flowers.

And a while ago, I saw this nearby. Ah, violets...

「またこの花が咲く季節になったんだな」
"The season has come again when this flower blooms"

By the way, in Japan, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom when 80% of the flowers have bloomed. This is because the flowers of the same tree bloom at different speeds, and by the time 100% of them bloom, some may have dropped, or the green leaves may have sprouted.

The Tailor and the Auto-Memories Doll (unofficial translation of 仕立て屋と自動手記人形)

仕立て屋と自動手記人形 (The Tailor and the Auto-Memories Doll) is a short story in the anthology KA Esuma Compilation (KAエスマ短編集) that was given to readers who collected the five light novel titles published by Kyoto Animation in 2020. I finally got my hands on a copy of it, so I decided to provide my own unofficial translation.

Note: The rights to the original work belong to the author Akatsuki Kana and Kyoto Animation. While this unofficial translation is being shared under fair use, I will remove it if it comes to my knowledge that this translation is being misused or if there is any infringement of the copyright owners' rights.

(You can find all my posts related to Violet Evergarden here, including my review of Violet Evergarden the Movie that debut in 2020 after watching it 14 times, my translation of the letter of appreciation from author Akatsuki Kana, my Tellsis language translator in Flutter and Python, my thoughts about the portrayal of guilt in Violet Evergarden, summary of production crew events, etc.)

The Tailor and the Auto-Memories Doll

仕立て屋と自動手記人形
暁 佳奈
--------------------------------------------

She was a girl with a wild beauty hidden underneath. Blonde hair that looked as if stars had been crushed and used to dye it. Blue eyes that looked like the most precious jewels used to decorate crowns. She was great material. But she wore no makeup. It looked as if she had woken up, washed her face, dressed, and came here.
Her clothes were probably given to her by someone much older. The cloth was good, but the design no longer in fashion. It was a simple dress, much like what an elderly couple would give their granddaughter. It looked good on her, but something bolder would suit her better.
My customer, Claudia Hodgins, had brought many women to look for me before. In his social circle, I have seen all kinds of women. But this one was the first that made me ponder over how to dress her. She was a lost child that had wandered into my castle, Canaria Tailor. A beautiful amateur who didn’t know what it means to dress up. But the gleaming emerald brooch on her chest and her stunning looks draws attention naturally.

“It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Violet Evergarden.”

This was the customer that showed up at my shop one afternoon.

My castle, Canaria Tailor, is a high-end tailor shop that I operate in Leiden, the capital of Leidenschaftlich. A shop run by a middle-aged man with no wife nor children, I have somehow managed to earn a reputation and keep it afloat. However, during the war, things hit rock bottom due to a lack of customers.
Recently, my past customers have started to return, and I can earn enough to eat well. I can even put out my own designs, and customers are happy with my work. One of them is Claudia, born into a leading merchant family in Leidenschaftlich. I have known him since he was a toddler. When he was learning to walk, I had just finished my apprenticeship as a tailor. When he joined the military, I had become a full-grown tailor and taken over the family business. When he left the army after the war to start his own business, I had become established as the owner of this shop.
As we both run services in the same town, our paths keep crossing even though we were different in age. He even let me make the dresses for the Dolls of his company. To be frank, I was somewhat touched. As a person without my own family, I have watched over him like a child for many years. Looking at the way Claudia dealt with this girl, it was immediately obvious that she was not his lover. He said that she was an Automemories Doll working for the postal company he had established.
“You were in the military, right?”
At my question, the girl, who had been standing straight like a doll while waiting in my shop, widened her eyes.
“Is it obvious?” Her soft-spoken words were conveyed in a sharp, beautiful voice that reminded me of snow crystals.
“Yes, the way you walk, the way you stand. Leidenschaftlich is a military country, and I have many customers who are in the military. These things become a habit and cannot be changed.”
Still, a girl soldier. Until recently, this girl had been carrying a rifle and running across battlefields. It was a bit hard to imagine, but things quickly became more real when I realized she had prosthetic arms while taking her measurements.
Prosthetic arms themselves were not really rare. The great war was just over. Such people are the ones who need tailor-made clothes, giving me the opportunity to meet them. On the streets, you can also see many people who walk with a stagger. But still, such a young girl…
“She was an excellent soldier. But now, she is my employee. Right, Violet?”
Hodgins’ words brought an end to this topic.
At first, we were seated around a table talking about designs, but she hardly spoke a word. I didn’t know if she lacked an interest in clothes, or if she didn’t even know what it means to be interested in clothes in the first place.
“I will leave everything up to President Hodgins.”
She seemed absent. She would look around the shop, then at her emerald brooch, and just kept repeating this loop.
She just wasn’t interested.
She was not interested in clothes. She was not interested in dressing up. Her interest was elsewhere. Such behavior felt rude in front of a tailor.
“Does she usually wear such clothes?” I asked, pointing at the dress she was wearing.
“It is from the lady of the Evergarden family. She has bought her many clothes, and so have I. But Violet only wears the plain-looking ones.”
“Bright colors make easy targets.”
At first, I didn’t understand what she was talking about. Then, I realized she was talking about being shot on the battlefield. Hodgins told her that she was not going to get shot at, but she didn’t look very convinced.
Ah, I thought, from here, this girl is going to learn about dressing up. That makes sense. All the dots have been connected. Suddenly, the way I saw her changed totally.
“Here, let me get you all kinds of stuff to try out.”
I felt a sense of mission. My words made her blink her blue eyes in bewilderment. Hodgins agreed, and that was all I needed. I took her prosthetic hands without hesitation and led her into my workshop.
“All kinds of stuff… what will I be trying out?”
“All kinds of stuff is… all kinds of stuff. Violet, when Mr. Canaria gets excited like this, he doesn’t listen to anyone. You just have to be a dress-up doll until he is satisfied. He made me try on all kinds of stuff too in the past.”
What a rude way to put it. This is the duty of a person with knowledge. It is an encouragement from a senior in life to a youngster. Born into this world, it is better for one to know the effects of dressing up. I am spending my life pursuing this knowledge. The world of fashion is an amazing one. If you know nothing about it, let me teach you. I want you to know. That is all.
As I opened up one closet after another, I said, “Show me what you want. It is also good for you to know what suits you.”
“Why?”
Her voice was loud and clear. Not to be beaten, I also spoke in a loud voice, “You said that bright colors make easy targets. That’s because you know from experience how you should dress on the battlefield, right?”
After a short pause, she nodded her head. “Yes...”
There was no need to tell me about the nostalgic sounds of the battlefield. What she needed was the sound of ribbons, silk, and frills rubbing against each other.
“All the more, you should learn how to dress up.”
I thrusted the pile of clothes I was carrying at her. She looked up from behind the huge pile and said, somewhat awkwardly, “Is it not enough to just wear clothes?”
I am not a kind person, so I shot down her question immediately. “No. That is a stupid question. The work you will be doing has been around for ages. It is also the dream job for many women. Your customers all hope you will help them to write elegant, polite, and sincere letters. You should dress in a fitting manner. Yes, that is right.”
“…”
“You want to know why?”
She looked straight at me and replied, “Yes.” This was followed by “Please teach me.” She had looked like a stubborn person, but it seemed she was an obedient child after all. With a slight smile, I said calmly, “Because you will be going off to fight on a new battlefield.”
As one grows old, it becomes harder to remember names. Her… Violet Evergarden’s eyes gradually grew larger as she heard my words.
“You are going to be an Automemories Doll, right? In this battlefield, women are beautiful, and maintaining appearances that fit this image… will be a weapon in this business, and also armor that protects you. That is why you need to try different weapons and find those that fit you. As a pioneer in this area, let me help you in making your choices. Do you think you can do it?”
In response to my question, Violet gave a salute and said, “Yes sir!”
Whatever a person’s standing, in front of me, they are lost children begging to be taught. “Let’s see… first, a longer skirt with a bit more volume.” To some people, dressing up can feel frightening. “You look surprisingly good in gorgeous clothes that are somewhat heavier at the top. How about this?” To these people, my job is to give them a push and some courage. “Give it a try. After a while, you won’t think that your clothes are too showy.” Fat or thin, tall or short.
“A bustle skirt should look good with that headdress. I am making some costumes for a play right now. Maybe those will look good on you too. Do you want to try them? It will give me some ideas. Hmm… I think it is better if you give the impression that you are not from here, that you are actually living somewhere else.”
A person sparkles by dressing up. A sparkling image will become a weapon, an advantage. “Sit over there and place your hand on the railing by the window. Yes, then turn your upper body slightly toward me.”
Violet Evergarden. Let me give you a weapon that will draw attention wherever you go. You will probably face problems different from the past at the places you will be fighting in the future. But things will be fine. Dress beautifully and face your problems with fortitude. I will give you the armor that lets you do so.

Like a fairy, like a wanderer. Spread your wings firmly in the world, Violet.

Daiso A4 frames

After getting the Violet Evergarden A4 clear files, I saw some people on Twitter using frames bought from Daiso to frame them up.

100 yen for a frame, not bad.

The thing to watch out for is to get the right size. Daiso sells frames for various sizes, and even when it says A4, there are those frames for A4 exactly, and those for A4 clear files (which are slightly larger than the A4 paper they are supposed to hold). Be sure to get the one that says "Compatible with clear file" if you are going to use it for clear files and not an A4 paper/photo.

This series comes in four colours: wood, gray, black, and white. I had wanted to get the white ones too, but it was out of stock. Apparently, the black frames and the white frames are packed as one set; only when both black frames and white frames are low in stock will the system be triggered to order more. I guess I will need to go to another Daiso store to see if they have the white ones.

New Violet Evergarden A4 clear files from Lotte and Aeon

A week ago, Lotte and Aeon again collaborated to give out Violet Evergarden A5 notebooks. This is part of their promotion campaign and has been going on for a couple of years now, it seems. I saw on Twitter that someone even called the number on the store poster and was told that there will be more giveaways in the coming weeks.

Today is a public holiday in Japan, but as a translator working from home, there is no such thing as a non-working day. Still, I managed to find time to whiz off to the nearest Aeon supermarket on Vivi. I headed straight for the corner where I found the A5 notebooks previously. Only to find them still there. No clear files. Hmm...

So I did what any fan would do.

I asked the store staff.

"I heard that there will be clear files being given away this week."

She promptly said she would help me check, then went off, and after about 5 minutes, came back with the clear files.

😍

I guess they were too busy since the supermarket just opened two hours ago, and they have yet to get down to changing the A5 notebooks to the A4 clear files.

And... the clear file spots a new design. On the front is Violet, and the back is Gilbert.

If you put them side by side, they look like they are lying on the grass looking at each other. 😍

Looking forward to something new next week!

海姫マレ Marine Princess Mare

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of KA Esuma, the publishing arm of Kyoto Animation, the company has published a new light novel called 海姫マレ (Marine Princess Mare). The official release date is March 18, 2022, and I received an email from Kyoanishop yesterday that my order has shipped.

And it arrived promptly today! 😍

The novel was written by Nishikawa Masashi, who wrote the scripts for series like Phantom World and Maid Dragon. The illustrations are by Takase Akiko, who was in charge of the illustrations for the Violet Evergarden series. I am looking forward to enjoying this work.

Set image print size and make black and white

This is a note to self for my own calligraphy stuff.

There is sometimes a need to print out templates in actual size. And to save ink when printing, I try to make it as much black and white as possible.

First, to convert to black and white and remove gray background.
In GIMP, under Colors -> Threshold, pull the pointer toward the right until the preview shows a more or less acceptable degree of black and white.

Then, to set the print size. As it is usually necessary to enlarge the image, the first thing is to scale up the image.
Under Image -> Scale Image, scale up the image by two to three times.
Then, set the print size by
Image -> Print Size, defining either the width or the height in mm.

Some final touches may be needed, such as using a brush to remove black spots, or using the fill tool to fill in areas with white color.

Finally, save the image in PDF format so that it can be posterized.

To posterize, install pdfposter using
sudo apt install pdfposter

Then run the following command:
pdfposter -s1 -mA4 input.pdf output.pdf

This will create a PDF file (output.pdf) with the image in several A4 pages (-mA4) with a scaling factor of 1 (-s1). Once it has been printed out, the final step is to paste the pages together.

Violet Evergarden 2022 school calendar

This was delivered today.

It is the Violet Evergarden 2022 school calendar. The dates are from April 2022 till March 2023, since the school year in Japan starts in April and ends in March of the following year.

Together with it was this.

As Volume 1 of the keyframes collection for the 2020 movie, it implies that there will be other subsequent volumes.

And I got this too. 😅

The school calendar for Miss Kobayashi's Maid Dragon.

Everything came together with the new series of pin badges for KA Esuma's anniversary.

By the way, Kyoanishop regularly restocks stuff, so there is no need to buy from scalpers.

Lotte and Aeon collaborate to give out Violet Evergarden A5 notebooks

Last year, Lotte and Aeon collaborated to give out memorabilia related to Violet Evergarden The Movie about six months after the movie's release in Japan. Well, it seems that someone at Lotte or Aeon is a fan of the Violet Evergarden series, because this year, the two companies are again collaborating to give out A5 notebooks. You get one A5 notebook free for every purchase of Lotte products at Aeon outlets.

I now have a lot of Lotte chocolates...

There are two designs.

The first design's front, back, and inner covers (front and back).

The second design's front, back, and inner covers (front and back).

Last year's giveaways spanned three phases, with A5 notebooks and clear files. There may be another series of giveaways over the next few weeks, so I am going to check out the stores again.

Consistency between "Violet Evergarden's If" and "Dietfried Bougainvillea's If"

When I saw this in "Violet Evergarden's If" (the four blacked out boxes are where the name of the girl is), I was amazed. Because of the consistency with "Diethard Bougainvillea's If", which was written after this story. Basically, it meant that author Akatsuki Kana had intended for the girl's name to be Linaria (リナリア), four characters long, when she first wrote "Violet Evergarden's If", which was handed out in September 2020 when Violet Evergarden The Movie was first aired in Japan.

The actual name Linaria only came out when "Diethard Bougainvillea's If" was published as part of Violet Evergarden: Last Letter in January 2022. We only got to know the girl was named Linaria by Diethard in January 2022. But back in 2020 (or even earlier), Akatsuki Kana had already given her a name.

Wow...

On the use of decoys

The issue of decoys came up in an online seminar that I attended, and it made me remember my days as a naval officer and how I felt about decoys back then.

Given that achieving surprise is a key factor in war, the use of decoys to draw away the enemy's attention seems to be an effective method. But what looks good on paper may not work well in execution. Decoys are really hard to use.

For a start, decoys need to be realistic. A decoy needs to look enough like a real objective in order to draw the enemy's attention. For example, a decoy force to fake an attack in Direction A needs to comprise of enough assets to make it look like we are actually going to attack something along that direction. Otherwise, the enemy will not take that bait; the enemy is not stupid. That is something that planners tend to forget. They think the enemy will act like how we think they will act. Unfortunately, the enemy is an intelligent being too, with its own set of experiences and knowledge to guide actions.

And the leads to another issue when using decoys. Assets need to be devoted to this decoy in order to make it realistic. But those assets can be employed elsewhere; it is an opportunity cost to employ them for decoys. There is thus a need to weigh whether the decoy is worth deploying. And this must be looked at from both success and failure. What is the gain we get from the enemy taking the bait? What do we lose if the bait is not taken? What can we otherwise do with the decoy assets?

Personally, I do not like to deliberately use decoys. All assets should be deployed toward achieving the objective. The trick is to make your main force, the real one, look like a decoy. If the enemy thinks the main force is a decoy and ignores it to look for the "real" force, then you will be able to achieve your objective with a lot less resistance. This is the art of winning without fighting. This is true deception in war. Deception in war is not about making your decoys look realistic; it is about not drawing attention to your main effort. Just like an excellent shiphandler is one that does not need to employ excellent shiphandling, the excellent warfighter is the one which does not need to carry out intense warfighting. The master is the one who can achieve the objective with the less resistance.

So yes, while decoys look good on paper, we need to remember that decoys require resources and assets to deploy, and whether they work or not depends on the perception of the enemy. Like what The Art of War says, the key is to make the real look false and the false look real. That is true deception in war.

Transferring files into a FreeDOS VM on Proxmox

After finally managing to install FreeDOS onto Proxmox, the next step was to copy in the DOS games that I have. This proved to be just as challenging...

First, I tried to create an image file with all the DOS games in them:
1. Create an empty 12GB image
dd if=/dev/zero of=dosgames.img bs=1024M count=12

2. Make a FAT32 partition
mformat -F -i dosgames.img

3. Copy everything inside my DOS games directory into the image file
mcopy -s -i dosgames.img /home/mygamesdirectory ::

However, that didn't work because it lacks a proper partition table and cannot be mounted into FreeDOS.
So, after formatting in FAT32 using step 1, I ran:
4. Create a primary partition using fdisk
fdisk dosgame.img
before going to step 3. Still didn't work. It would not mount it properly as a drive, and if I tried to mount the image file as a CD-ROM, it would fail to recognise it.

I tried replacing step 1 with qemu-img instead by
7. Create disk image file using qemu-img
qemu-img create dosgames.img 12G
and then repeating steps 4 and 3, but that didn't work too.

Then I thought about transferring via the network. But FreeDOS's networking support is... well, DOS level. It requires some work to get things done. I had wanted to try to use SMB share to transfer the files onto the FreeDOS VM, but setting up SMB on FreeDOS looked like a challenge. (Another link to how to use MS Client 3.0 with FreeDOS) Instead, I installed the networking packages using FDIMPLES, and followed the instructions here to run an FTP server within the VM that can be accessed from outside. There were some changes in commands, though. For example, to start network services, I used
\FREEDOS\BIN\FDNET.BAT
and to start the FTP server, it was
\NET\FTPSVR

This started up the FTP server within the FreeDOS VM, but trying to transfer gigabytes of files over to the server took a lot of time, so I gave up.

Finally, I came upon making a CD-ROM ISO file using mkisofs by
mkisofs -o dosgames.iso /home/mygamesdirectory
This command takes the entire content of mygamesdirectory and turns it into an ISO file called dosgames.iso. I could then upload this ISO file to the server (usual way of uploading ISOs via the Proxmox web UI) and mount it as a CDROM drive.

This allowed me to then use xcopy to copy all the files into a directory on C drive.
a. Make a directory for DOS games
md dosgames
b. Go into that directory
cd dosgames
c. Use xcopy to recursively copy all file from D drive into the current directory
xcopy d: /e

Finally!

Next is to see if the games even run...
(maybe need set BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T6 P330 in AUTOEXEC.BAT)
(Next is to try on my normal Linux machine...
qemu-system-x86_64 -name FreeDOS -machine pc-i440fx-4.2,accel=kvm,usb=off,dump-guest-core=off -enable-kvm -cpu host -m 256 -overcommit mem-lock=off -no-user-config -nodefaults -rtc base=utc, driftfix=slew -no-hpet -boot menu=on,strict=on -sandbox on,obsolete=deny, elevateprivileges=deny, spawn=deny, resourcecontrol=deny -msg timestamp=on -hda cdrive.raw -cdrom dosgames.iso -device sb16 -device adlib -soundhw pcspk -vga cirrus -display sdl -usbdevice mouse
to see if this works...)
(Above from this link. Plus the ebook may help. And this link too.)

P.S. I am kind of sure my final conclusion will be... use DOSBox... 😅

Afternotes:
There is also the method where you mount the disk image on the host system and transfer files into it, detailed here.

Install FreeDOS 1.3 RC5 on Proxmox

FreeDOS 1.3 RC5 was released recently, and I thought I would give it a try to see if I can run some old DOS games. Since I don't really have old PC hardware, I thought I can try to make a FreeDOS virtual machine on one of my servers, the Poweredge R430.

FreeDOS does not use a lot of resources, so I created a basic VM with 2 cores, 256 MB of RAM, and a 20 GB harddisk (to store the games, mostly; FreeDOS can easily be installed in something less than 500 MB; use a raw disk image instead of qcow2). For display, use SPICE since it allows you to forward sound.

If your virtual disk is not partitioned, the FreeDOS installer will try to partition it... the problem is that it will slice them into partitions of 2 GB max. So with 20 GB, that means 10 virtual harddisks. Not what I want. The way to avoid this is to manually format the virtual disk before installation.

This is done within the FreeDOS live environment. Use the CD image to boot. Then, run
fdisk
and create a new primary partition, with the option to use FAT32, and all available space on the virtual harddisk. Once that is done,
reboot
to reboot the VM and boot into the FreeDOS live installer again. This time, you can choose the option to install FreeDOS. It should see that the harddisk is already partitioned, and will as if you want to erase and format the drive. Choose yes and continue with the installation.

If you cannot boot from the system harddisk, this could be because FreeDOS is mounting your harddisk as A drive instead of C drive. The solution is to add a placeholder floppy drive. (Got the hint to the solution from this page.) This can be done by creating the virtual floppy drive as a raw disk image. You will need mtools to do the manual format, which can be installed by
apt install mtools

Then, through the server's console, go to the directory where VM disk images are stored. This is usually /var/lib/vz/images/XXX (where XXX is the VM ID). Next is to manually create and format the disk image being used as a floppy disk.
qemu-img create adrive.raw 1440K
mformat -i adrive.raw

Once that is done, the VM's config file found in /etc/pve/qemu-server/XXX.conf (XXX is VM ID) and add
args: -audiodev spice,id=spice -machine pcspk-audiodev=spice -device sb16 -device adlib -device gus -drive file=/zfspool/pve430zfs/images/203/adrive.raw,if=floppy,index=0
By the way, if you see the above, you will realise that I have quite some "device" stuff... those are supposedly needed for sound.

Networking may also be a problem, so the best thing is to edit the VM's config file to use pcnet as the network adapter. Open the VM's config file found in /etc/pve/qemu-server/XXX.conf (XXX is VM ID) and change the line
net0: e1000=......
to
net0: pcnet=......
(basically, e1000 to pcnet)
This will allow you to start networking inside FreeDOS with the command
\freedos\bin\fdnet.bat

FreeDOS also has a bonus CD with extra stuff, which you can mount to the VM after FreeDOS has been installed. Then, run
fdimples
which will allow you to install additional packages from the CD (either the installer or bonus CD, whichever is mounted).

I have yet to actually test the VM yet, because installing it took a long time... will test out sound to see if it works. For now... time to sleep.

Additional notes:
Getting sound to work is a pain. Maybe I should try this on a Raspberry Pi 4 instead like this post. Or try the instructions here on my Linux machine. Or this script?

Update March 22, 2022: I just saw this video and realised that I probably installed the official release of FreeDOS 1.3 instead of RC5. 😅
