Once again, the audio commentary of episode 6 of Violet Evergarden TV series had Ishidate Taichi (director), Fujita Haruka (series direction), and Ishikawa Yui (Violet's voice actor) as the commentators.
This time, they talked about their memories from advance screenings in Los Angeles, Germany, and Singapore.
For Los Angeles (Anime Expo 2017), the event took place in July 2017. It was attended by Ishidate, Ishikawa, and singer TRUE. It took place before the anime was screened in Japan, and with only information from the trailer, Ishidate was worried if people would actually come due to the lack of information. He felt relieved that people turned up and queued to enter the screening venue. At the same time, he also felt a bit worried if the production staff could meet fans' expectations. It was also Ishidate's first trip to the United States. He didn't know what Americans' tastes were like, so when the screening ended with thunderous applause, he felt a bit worried if they were just being nice. However, after the screening, a backstage staff came to express his praise directly to Ishidate, and he felt reassured that the series would be accepted outside Japan.
For Germany, screening took place in August 2017 at AnimagiC. It was attended by Ishidate and TRUE. He heard that Germans are similar in character to Japanese people, so it may be easier for them to understand a work from Japan. He also heard that Germans are more reserved. But when he got there, he felt that the Germans were like Americans. On the first day, there was no queue for the screening, but the place was still a full house after the venue opened. There was a queue on the second day, however. The interpreter said that most Germans don't plan in advance, which may be why there was a lack of queue on first day.
The screening in Singapore took place at C3 AFA Singapore 2017 in November 2017. It was attended by Fujita, Takase Akiko (chief animation director and character designer), Ishikawa, singer Chihara Minori, and TRUE. There was also a local cosplayer who made her own Violet costume. This screening took place after the advance screening in Japan in Kyoto, where episodes 1 and 2 were shown to Japanese fans. They felt that Singaporeans were probably more like Americans, from how they enjoyed watching the screening together, and that Singaporeans laughed a lot. Fujita was at their booth after the screening when she was approached by visitors. She didn't understand them but it felt like they enjoyed the screening. Ishikawa also saw many people at the booth looking at the key frames. They mentioned that they had CH Postal uniforms (bluish vests with "CH" printed) and brought back those uniforms with them.
Ishidate then went back to talking about AnimagiC. One female staff had asked for an interview for her magazine. During the interview, she said she was deeply touched and that she cried when watching the episode. He could sense from AnimagiC that the Germans really love Japanese anime. There were slots for opening and closing before each event when guests had to come on stage and talk, and he didn't actually know so he didn't prepare in advance about what to say.
From these events, Ishidate could sense that people overseas were really interested in the series, and he felt he needed to work seriously to meet their expectations.
Ishikawa said that, unlike events overseas, production staff usually do not get to appear at Japanese events. Ishidate followed up by saying that many animators actually are not very good at appearing in front of other people, so they expand their worlds on paper.
