The audio commentary of episode 3 of Violet Evergarden TV series again had Ishidate Taichi (director), Fujita Haruka (series direction), and Takase Akiko (chief animation director and character designer) as the commentators.
Ishidate started by saying that he apologised to TRUE for not using the opening song until episode 3. They then talked a bit about the two songs used for the opening and ending. Ishidate mentioned that both Chihara Minori and TRUE had similar concepts about music for the series, making it easy to work with them.
Regarding the costumes, Takase had been working on them since the light novels. She became a fan after reading the light novels. Violet and Benedict's designs for the light novels were largely unchanged for the anime, with minor amendments for the anime. She wanted to give Violet an image of a lady in the workforce and the style of a doll, to express both soft and hard together in the costume. Therefore, Violet's costume had sleek lines but also fluffiness. She also mentioned that she especially liked drawing the lines around the waist. Meanwhile, Ishidate said that Fujita told him that she really could not figure out the structure of Violet's skirt. Fujita was worried that, as the skirt is made from a single sheet, when the wind blows during the ending song, it might expose Violet. This was something that she had been wondering about from the time they worked on the commercial, where Ishidate did the stroyboard and Fujita was a key animator.
Takase said that she wanted to recreate fluffiness that looks real. Then, Ishidate said he was quite bewildered when he first saw the character designs for Hodgins and Benedict. Takase said that Hodgins worn clothes like that because of the hot climate. Being in a hot climate, the characters showed more skin. Also, for Benedict, it was author Akatsuki Kana who wanted him to be a guy who wears high heels, so Takase designed him while imagining that he has a more unconventional approach to fashion. As a contrast, while other characters showed more skin, Violet is usually covered.
Regarding the design of the original characters, Takase made Luculia more simple and ordinary to contrast with Violet. Spencer was designed to look similar to Luculia to show that they are siblings. For Rhodanse, she wanted to keep her expression consistently strict but showing her side as a good teacher in the end. Meanwhile, Alberta was cool and strict but also motherly.

The way that Luculia cried in episode 3 was something that Kitanohara Noriyuki (storyboard) came up with. The building up of tears before they flowed down became an idea that Takase continued to use in other episodes: when Charlotte was getting married in episode 5, and Ann's mother in episode 10.
They said that "I'm happy that you're alive" is a phrase that anyone would be happy to hear. This part was written by Urahata Tatsuhiko (scenario). Finally, as another side note, they mentioned that Ishidate likes to quote notable phrases by the anime's characters.
