DNS-312H Network Attached Storage

I went out shopping yesterday. Came back with a new network attached storage (NAS), which is basically a standalone file server. The DNS-312H from D-link, which comes with 120 GB of storage space.

Installing it was a headache. The 2wire hub that comes with Singtel's mio plan uses 192.168.1.x for addresses, but the default address of the DNS-312H was 192.168.0.101, which ended up with me having to do quite some configuring before I could convince the NAS to get its IP from DHCP.

In trying to get into the configuration for the NAS, I had to work on some of my network settings on my WinXP PC, and now, the workgroups is still quite messed up... I couldn't access the NAS from my WinXP PC... yet to be fixed.

So I gave myself some time, and went to try to link up on my Linux box instead. With Fedora Core 5 still installed, I didn't know that FC5 does not support smbfs anymore... I was trying to mount the NAS, which I could, but the file permissions were screwed. After wasting hours, I gave up.

Today, coming back from work, I tried again on my Linux box, and actually found a solution on the Internet. All I had to do, as root, was:
/sbin/modprobe cifs
echo 0 > /proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled
Then, when I tried to mount the share, it worked! I had to set the uid and gid, though. But at least it worked! I could read and write files at last.

Time to get back to solving the problem with accessing from my WinXP PC...

Okay, after spending a few more hours on the Internet and the computer, trying out various ways to get into the NAS, I still am not able to access my NAS DNS-312H from Windows XP. I can ftp in, can http in do admin work, but I cannot use file sharing with it. Basically, it does not show when I try to view workgroup computers. When I try to connect to it by entering its address, it asks me to log in with a user name and password. However, even though I try to do so with accounts I had created on the NAS, I was unable to log in (it just keeps prompting me again and again for user name and password). If anyone has seen such problems or know the solution, do let me know. Thanks!

I still have no luck getting the NAS to work on Windows XP. I can now see it when I view workgroup computers, but when I try to access it, it doesn't ask me for a log in name and password anymore. It just tells me that I cannot access the resources on the NAS. Sigh.

Called D-Link technical support today. Well, after half an hour talking to the tech support, the conclusion was that they don't know what is wrong. They sent me a file telling me how to map a network drive, which I already know. It didn't solve the problem, which is basically the NAS does not show up on my workgroup computers, and when I try to enter in the address of the NAS directly, it keeps asking me for a log in username and password, but won't let me in even when I enter in a valid username and password combination. Anyone has any inkling of how to get this thing to work?

Doh!! I've been thinking about getting a NAS for some time now but since I just use large external hard drives (500G & 250G) I just can't justify the costs.

Plus, after reading about all your headaches, I'll hold back a bit :)

I have given up trying to make it work, maybe I will have better luck when I get a new computer and try to see if Windows Vista will be able to access the NAS. Meanwhile, I spend my time on better things, like practising taiji.

You cant login or map this NAS? use this workaround.

- Click start
- Type: regedit
- Press enter
- In the left, expand these folders:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Control\

- In the left, click on the folder named:

Lsa

- In the right, double-click "LmCompatibilityLevel"
- Type the number 1 and press enter
- Restart your computer

Thanks, I will try this out once I get my HP PC working again... I think it is a harddisk failure, but HP seems to be taking their own sweet time to respond to my problem.

Sounds like you were having similar problems with this NAS as I've had. I (eventually) could see it in the workgroup, but kept asking me for user name & password to connect. Nothing I'd created worked. However "guest" with no password worked fine 8-)
I see this thread is a few months old, but may help someone else doing some googling...

I am having very similar issues with the repetitive password asking. Initially on one XP computer it worked fine when I tried to map the network drive...THEN...none of my computers on the network would connect to the Internet. The NAS was assigning the IP addresses, not my Verizon router. I changed that and ever since I cannot map the network drive on any network computer...I just get the password asking...over and over and over again. I tried guest, that didn't work for me either. Has anyone seen the movie Office SPace...when they take the printer out back in a field...that's how I'm feeling about now. The monitor is so close to the window...Someone talk me down...why shouldn't I throw it through? HAHA
(My 1993 Toyota has started every morning for 16 years now...even if it was 10 below zero and I left it all weekend - computers have what...a %50 fail rate? WHY IS THIS THE STATUS QUO?)

I know this post is a bit old now but I will tell you anyway.

I have A DNS-312H and it works fine on My xp computer and my laptop running vista. I disabled the the DHCP on the NAS and also assigned my own IP address to it in the same range as all my network devices. Also the DNS-312H must be in the same workgroup as all other devices on your network for it to show up in My Network. To do this start your browser type the ip address of the NAS and then click the tools TAB and then on the ledft hand side select WIN/MAC and in the workgroup box type the name of your workgroup and click apply and all should be ok.

I no longer have any problems after switching to Vista.

The problem of having to relogin everytime is also gone, somehow. Didn't do anything but it went away after some time.

Hi,
May I know DNS-312H support NTFS read and write or not ?
How about when connect to USB thumbdrive (NTFS read and write) ?

Thanks in advance.
