My thoughts on blogging

Today, over the radio, a DJ commented that "Bloggers are idiots" and goes on to say that the comment "It is not personal." I had a good mind to call in to the radio station and say that all DJs are idiots and my comment is not personal. Blogging is nothing more than a tool. Before blogging, we had the normal HTML. Publishing things on the Internet was a bit more difficult, since you needed to learn HTML. Then tools started to appear and they made homepage publishing so much more simpler. Yet there is still the need to upload the updated pages onto the server. Blogging is a great tool for homepage publishing that takes simplifies the process. It is easy to edit your pages. It is easy to post pages to the server. So blogging is not that much different from publishing homepages. If bloggers "are idiots", then so are all those who have published homepages in the past.

I would prefer to think of it as a means of expressing our thoughts, of sharing our experiences and even knowledge with others. Just as DJs share their opinions over national radio, and columnists share theirs in their newspaper columns, and authors share theirs in their books, bloggers share with people through their blogs. So bloggers aren't that much different from everyone else that share with others. And similarly, just as you can choose to skip reading a column, don't pick up a book, or switch to another radio station, you can always choose not to read the blog.

My previous works

I will be including some of my previous works in this blog, so watch this space! By works, I mean my poems and also some programs (in C) that were written some time back. Most of the programs would be of use to computer science students. Some others I did for fun (yes, I like to do programming).

Catches at Bedok Jetty

The above fishes were caught over the last two weekends. The golden trevally (caught on 22 Jul 06) was caught nibbling on my hook (which I had hooked up with some tamban meat) and it was about the size of my palm. There wasn't much of a fight, I didn't even know I had a bite until I reeled in my line to check the bait. Imagine my surprise. It was going to rain and I was about to call it a day. 22 Jul was a good day for tamban, though. I probably caught 50 of them, in all sizes.

Setting off to Bedok Jetty again on 29 Jul 06 morning, with firm instructions not to bring home any of the fishes caught (my fridge was still full of the tambans caught the previous week), I arrived to find that it is a slow day at the jetty. Even the tambans were not biting, and I got only about 10 of them in the first hour of jigging. Then again, I didn't really need that many, just enough to use as baits. I caught the puffer on one of my rods, guess the puffer liked tamban meat. The flathead (that's what a boy at the jetty told me it was, and he said it is nice to eat too) was caught on handline. Again, I didn't realise the flathead had taken the hook, until I pulled in the line to check the bait.

Make cars without signal lights

The way Singaporean drivers drive, cars should be made without signal lights. After all, why put in a feature that is not used by 90% of the users? I am sure most of you out there who drive in Singapore (or ride, for that matter) know what I am talking about. Drivers changing lanes without giving any form of signals, or signalling just as they are changing lanes. There are also drivers who turn without signalling. Cars were built with signal lights so that people can let others know their intentions (change lanes, turn, stop at the side of the road, etc.) but if people are not going to observe these simple basic rules, our roads will never be a safe place. Anyway, I wonder if cars come cheaper without signal lights...

My first catch

This was my first significant catch at Bedok Jetty. I have been fishing there for the last 3 months, but I had only luck getting tambans (a kind of baitfish) and once landed a baby mackeral while jigging for baitfishes. This small queenfish was caught on 8 Jul 06 using tamban meat on an apollo rig. I had almost decided to give up and was going to pack up and go home when the reel started screaming. I rushed over to grab hold of the fishing rod, and reeled in this small queenfish.
